My son Anders is seven today. Seven years ago he came zooming into our lives like a rocket ship and he's had us all charmed ever since. I've written before about how I knew nothing of little boys before I had a son. I've penned many birthday tributes to him, see here and here.
This boy of mine really is special. Of course, every mother in the history of all time thinks their child hung the moon. But I am convinced that mine really did.
His best friend is a chicken named Sparky.
He would eat ice cream for breakfast every day if I let him. He loves football (specifically UCLA football) and is obsessed with Words With Friends. I currently have six games going with him. He loves spicy food, but only if it's cooked by his dad or his Ba. Do not even attempt to feed him anything green, unless it's a green bean and then only if it's made with tons of garlic and salt.
99% of the time his sisters adore him. He will grow up with an appreciation for women whether he likes it or not. At the end of the school day I think they are genuinely happy to see each other.
He is a perfectionist just like his dad. Nothing he does is halfway. When he commits, he gives it 100%. He comes in a small package, but his personality is larger than life. He's the smallest kid in his class, girls included, but don't tell him that. His small stature does not hold him back at all.
I wish I had his confidence. When he was in kindergarten he signed up to break dance in front of the entire elementary school at lunch time. I was terrified for him and that morning I told his sisters that if anyone at school made fun of him, they better stick up for him. They looked at me and said, "don't worry mom, everyone loves Anders." And sure enough, when I picked him up I found him standing in front of a line of children waiting for his autograph.
Some might describe him as quirky and I embrace that label for my son. His quirks never cease to delight me.. like when he asked me to take his picture in front of every statue we came across at a hotel in Hawaii so he could make a photo collage.
Happy Birthday Anders! You may be small, but you are mighty. And I am your biggest fan.
